Melanochrysum is a large velvet leaf variety of philodendron whose leaves start out pink with light green veins and slowly matures into a deep dark green with a velvety texture. This plant does require a totem or some sort of pole to climb otherwise it will tendency to meander and droop. This is a superior variety philodendron which is quite easy to grow. Philodendron plants can be grown in pots, hanging baskets or outdoors as a ground cover or beautiful tree wrap.
THIS SPECIFIC PLANT: This well established, and well rooted Melanochrysum has been grown from a stem cutting. It currently has four leaves, with one that has recently unfurled! If left to grow vertically, and in the right conditions, it will gradually produce larger leaves as it climbs up-wards. Please note the minor imperfections on the leaves.
CARE: They thrive in moist soils with high organic matter (stay away from wet, mucky or dry, sandy soils), and grow best when provided with a mossy post or burlap wrapped pole to climb. It will require frequent watering to keep the soil moist (but not wet). Humid conditions are ideal, so a humidifier is recommended, or misting the leaves a few times a day. Indoors plants thrive at temperatures between 12°c- 26°F and in lower light conditions than other house plants.
